for the correction of

Stress Urinary Incontinence

Many women are troubled by leakage of urine when they cough, laugh, sneeze, jump, run or laugh. This condition is called Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI). It most often occurs in women after childbearing. Usually it is due to an anatomical change in the position of the bladder and urethra.

An operation has been available for a long time to correct SUI. It required an incision on the abdomen and two to four days hospital stay. Recent advances in minimally-invasive laparoscopic surgery have made it possible to perform the same operation as an outpatient. The results are the same but without the long hospitalization, discomfort and disability.

In March, 1995 I attended a hands-on surgical preceptorship in this new technique. Since then I have performed the surgery on my patients in Bedford with excellent results. This outpatient treatment of a common and often embarassing condition will be of benefit to many women.
